Casto Canyon Trail PDF Print E-mail

The Route: This is another incredibly scenic route that can be enjoyed by cyclists of all abilities. The trail through Casto Canyon runs along the bottom wash of a spectacular wonderland of pink cliffs and red rock formations that are common to this area, the most popular of these local canyons being Bryce Canyon National Park, where bikes are forbidden off road. Casto Canyon is the alternative for a backcountry adventure through these magnificently eroded formations.

Directions: This trail has several options depending on one’s skill level. Novice and intermediate riders can enjoy Casto as an out and back, just turn around when you feel you have reached your limit. Advanced riders will enjoy conquering the area in a 20 mile loop trail that descends through Red Canyon at the end. From the town of Panguitch, follow Hwy. 89 south for 7 miles to the junction with Hwy. 12 and turn left (east). Proceed on 12 in the direction of Bryce Canyon and enter Red Canyon after 3 miles. Shortly ahead is the Red Canyon Visitor Center. Park here for the advanced loop ride. From the visitor center pedal back towards 89 for 1.5 miles on UT 12. On your right will be a sign denoting the turn for Casto/Losee canyons. Turn right (north) on the graded dirt road and pass Losee Canyon after 2 miles. 1 mile further is the mouth of Casto Canyon. There is a parking area here and pit toilet. This is also the trailhead for riders choosing the easier out and back option. Head east up Casto on the smooth super singletrack ATV trail. The trail crosses the wash a few times and can be rough in places, but it is nothing too difficult. After about 4 miles the trail reaches a junction, this is a good turnaround point for an intermediate ride. The junction is signed for Barney Cove and climbs to the left (north) out of Casto. If continuing on the loop, veer right and pick up the singletrack across the wash. About 1.5 miles further, pass Casto Spring and continue on the singletrack to the junction with the dirt road signed Showalter Canyon (straight), Sanford Canyon (left), Hwy. 12, Red Canyon (right). Go right (south) and ascend the hill following the jeep road up Tent Hollow. Continue on the road past the crest as it drops downhill to another junction for FS 120 and FS 121. Go right on 121 through Cabin Hollow to the junction with Hwy. 12. Upon reaching UT 12, turn right and enjoy the high speed coast down Red Canyon back to the Visitor Center. Use caution while descending through Red Canyon and the two tunnels, it is also easier to enjoy the view along this beautiful road.
