Price Mountain Biking
p. Monique Beeley When it comes to mountain biking areas that are worth loading up the car and traveling to, there are three categories; 1. Shared-use areas- Places where hikers, bikers, and motorized users share slickrock and rugged terrain and often entertain each other with various displays of skill (read, crashing). 2. High alpine forests- places where hikers & bikers spend hours or days in wild seclusion among the flora & fauna of nature riding trails 4WD roads and firebreaks. 3. Singletrack Trail Systems- Places where mountain bikers and other trail advocates have built ride-specific technical trails expressly for mountain bikes, often with artificial trail features. Utah's Castle Country has an extraordinary variety of everything a mountain biker could want. Namely, all three of the above.
Number 1. The San Rafael Swell. With its massive sandstone cliffs, high desert vistas, deep carved washes and seemingly endless slickrock bands, there’s something for every fat tire junkie. From the easy cruising of Buckhorn Draw and Temple Mountain to the wide-open Black Dragon Canyon (17 miles of downhill!) to the technically challenging Iron Wash Singletrack and 5-Miles of Hell, The Swell has it all.
Number 2. The Manti-LaSal National Forest borders Castle Country on the west and is home to moose, elk, deer, and some of the most secluded alpine riding in the state. A mountain biker can cruise all day without ever seeing another of their species but plenty of other kinds. The 28-mile Pete's Hole loop near Joe's Valley and the 17-mile Fish Creek downhill are local favorites, and the Castle Valley Ridge trail boasts one of the most impressive views anywhere in Utah.
Number 3. Just north of Price, in the colorful mesas beneath the Book Cliffs, the Price Area Singletrack Society (PASS) has been laying out and building an outstanding Singletrack trail system over the past five years. PASS hosts a number of events throughout the season to help introduce new people to their trails. From the twisty-fun Luke's Trail to the intimidating Dead-Dog Spine & Bomberella, PASS has built your type of trail.
